Maastricht University, is recognised as the European university of the Netherlands. With a vibrant community of 22,000 students and 5,000 staff, the university sits at the heart of Europe, connected to major cities across the continent, both academically and geographically.

Main Task

Maastricht University’s role is to develop and characterise lignin-based resins for waterproofing coatings, using the depolymerised lignin fractions produced within SPLENDOR. The team will functionalise lignin through organic chemistry and design crosslinking strategies that enable recycling (so-called covalent adaptable networks). Alongside detailed chemical analysis, the material properties will be assessed through rheology, DMA, tensile testing, and related methods. The performance of the lignin-based resins in coating applications will also be evaluated, in close collaboration with SOPREMA.
